Grandpa Sneakers Are the Latest Ugly Shoe Trend You’re Going to Be Wearing

The ugly shoe trend is a fashion phenomenon that’s grown so popular, we pretty much expect it every season. We’ve seen the Birkenstock, the Teva and even Crocs experience runway rebirths that sparked fashion insider frenzies. So when chunky grandpa sneakers (alternative name: dad shoes) burst onto the scene, it was all but inevitable and just as displeasing to the eye as its predecessors — which is, of course, what makes it cool.

We first noticed the clunky, almost orthopedic-looking footwear in December when Bella Hadid stepped out in her Balenciaga Triple S Sneakers. Also spotted in the supportive shape? Kendall Jenner and Teyana Taylor, who both rocked Adidas Yeezy Boost 700 Wave Runners. And just like that, a trend was born — or at least, officially confirmed.

And yes, paired with jeans and minidresses, these thick-soled sneaks looked chic.

Insect Repelling Plants And Other Ineffective, Yet Common Ways People Fight Mosquitoes

Insect Repelling Plants And Other Ineffective, Yet Common Ways People Fight Mosquitoes

There is literally nobody on earth who enjoys mosquito bites. In fact, being bitten by several mosquitoes on a hot day is like a nightmare for all people on the planet. Due to the natural desire to be rid of mosquitoes once and for all, several products and remedies have been suggested as effective mosquito-control methods over the years. History is full of different absurd insect-control methods, but surely in today’s world outdated and ineffective mosquito-control remedies are not taken seriously, right? Unfortunately, this is not the case, as several anti-mosquito products are still making snake-oil entrepreneurs millions of dollars every day. Given the modern and widespread concern people have about mosquito-borne diseases, you would think that only the most scientifically reliable mosquito-control methods would be used by the public today. Sadly, there remains several worthless anti-mosquito products and methods that are still used with enthusiasm. You may be surprised to learn which mosquito-control methods have been scientifically dismissed as worthless.

Back in the ‘90s everybody was using citronella candles in order to keep mosquitoes from ruining people’s outdoor fun. Ideally, these candles emit a certain scent that mosquitoes cannot tolerate. So if you surround yourself with citronella candles you will remain free from mosquito-attacks, correct? Actually, not so much. According to Dr. Stan Cope with the American Mosquito Control Association, the only thing about citronella candles that may keep mosquitoes away is the smoke. Since smoke is blown away by wind, these candles do not do much good. There has also never been any scientific evidence that suggests that citronella candles can keep mosquitoes away. Some people are convinced that certain plants work to keep mosquitoes away, but once again, this is not true. In fact, having plants in your yard or on your deck only provides mosquitoes with more dark and moist forms of shelter. Some plants produce essential oils that mosquitoes do not agree with, but these oils can only be obtained by crushing and processing certain plant leaves. Of course, there are also bug-zappers. These devices can be bought in stores and they look like blue-light bulbs enclosed in a cage that hangs from an awning. Bug-zappers work to keep many insects away, but not mosquitoes. According to a study conducted at Notre Dame, only four to six and a half percent of bugs killed by zappers in one day were mosquitoes. When it comes to preventing mosquito bites, Dr. recommended mosquito-repellent is the only way to go.

Have you ever found success with any of these supposed mosquito-control methods?

James Comey calls out 'weasels and liars' amid partisan wrangling over the Nunes memo

James Comey

  • Former FBI director James Comey praised the FBI for “speaking up,” in an apparent reference to a rare public statement issued by the department on concerns over a controversial memo Republicans are clamoring to release.
  • That memo alleges political bias against President Donald Trump and improper spying by the FBI and Justice Department.
  • Comey has been increasingly vocal with his support for his former FBI colleagues since Trump fired him in may 2017.

Former FBI director James Comey praised the FBI for “speaking up,” in an apparent reference to a statement issued by the department earlier this week expressing its concern over the release of a GOP-supported House Intelligence Committee memo.

“All should appreciate the FBI speaking up. I wish more of our leaders would,” Comey tweeted on Thursday. “But take heart: American history shows that, in the long run, weasels and liars never hold the field, so long as good people stand up.

“Not a lot of schools or streets named for Joe McCarthy,” Comey said, referencing the Cold War-era senator from Wisconsin who promoted draconian methods  for combating the threat of communism, such as accusing hundreds of State Department officials of having communist ties, sometimes without substantial evidence.

Comey’s statement follows the FBI’s opposition to the public release of the Republican-led House Intelligence Committee memo, which reportedly contains details of purported anti-Trump bias at the FBI and the Justice Department. FBI director Christopher Wray reportedly told the White House that the memo contained “material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo’s accuracy.”

It’s not the first time Comey has spoken up in support of his former agency. After deputy FBI director Andrew McCabe’s abrupt resignation this week, Comey commended his service and asked for “continued strength for the rest of the FBI.”

“America needs you,” Comey said on Monday.
